In 1935, the Government of India Act was passed as a way of appeasing the demands of Indian nationalists. It granted greater ‘provincial autonomy’. This meant that the hold of the centre over the different provinces in India now reduced considerably. The Act was passed by the British Parliament after a series of Round Table Conferences between the British government and major Indian political personalities.
