Solution
The correct option is B Retinol: Beriberi Our diet should include energy yielding nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, along with micronutrients such as minerals and vitamins. The significance of minerals and vitamins is given below:
Iodine: It is a component of thyroid hormones and its deficiency produces goitre. Iodine deficiency cuses swelling in thyroid gland and reduced mental function.
Retinol: It is also known as Vitamin A and is the principal component of retinal pigments. it promotes normal vision and its deficiency causes night blindness.
Thiamine: It plays role in formation of enzymes for citric acid cycle and its deficiency causes beriberi. The symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue and paralysis.
Ascorbic acid: It plays role in the synthesis of tooth dentine, collagen, bone matrix, etc. Its deficiency results in failure to form connective tissue or scurvy which is seen as bleeding gums and loose teeth.
Iron: It is a component in respiratory pigments and oxygen transport enzymes. Its deficiency doesn't allow RBCs to mature resulting in anaemia. Anaemia is a low haemoglobin condition.
