Silk is obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm. These are the steps followed for farming silkworms and extraction of silk.
The eggs of the silkmoths are brought and are carefully cultured under controlled conditions.
Larvae or silkworms hatch from eggs laid by adults.
The larvae are fed mulberry leaves to grow bigger.
Once the larvae have grown about 10,000 times their hatching size, they spin a cocoon of silk in order to metamorphose into an adult silk moth.
These cocoons are collected for the silk. The larvae are killed by boiling them and only the silk cocoons are used to collect the silk thread.
