Choose the option that gives the correct order of layering procedure.
a – Roots begin to groow on the stem
b – The stem is bent and buried in soil
c – The stem is cut from the parent plant
d – New leaves start developing on the stem
b, a, d, c
In the layering procedure, the stem is first buried into the soil from which roots develop. New shoots and leaves may also develop. At a point when the new plant is said to be mature enough, the stem is cut from the parent plant and planted again. This grows into a new plant.
This is different from stem cutting because in this method the stem is cut after the roots develop. In stem cutting, the stem is first cut and then buried. Roots develop from this part. Stem cutting is carried out for the plants that do not have flexible stems which cannot be bent and buried in the soil.
