The electron gain enthalpy of an element is defined as the energy liberated when an electron is added to its neutral gaseous atom. The image given below shows the electron affinity trend across the period and down the group.


F (2nd period) has less electron gain enthalpy than Cl (3rd period) because:
- the size of F is very small and compact.
- the electron-electron repulsion in 2p subshell are comparatively large.
