In a haplontic life cycle the gametophyte is dominant and photosynthetic. In most green algae, the major part of the life cycle consists of the haploid gametophyte stage. Zygote is the only diploid sporophytic phase, and is reduced to just a single cell. In such algae, the zygote undergoes meiosis immediately after it is formed. This unusual meiosis which is a characteristic of these algae is called zygotic meiosis.
