A cisternae is the flattened membrane bound tube-like structure found in both endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. In Golgi apparatus it has two faces the cis-cisternae, followed by the medial cisternae, then the trans-cisternae as they move away from the endoplasmic reticulum. It helps in the transportation of proteins and other Golgi enzymes. In endoplasmic reticulum, cisternae transport proteins to the vesicles of Golgi apparatus.
