BELL JAR EXPERIMENT
Take an electric bell and an airtight glass bell jar. The electric bell is suspended inside the airtight bell jar. The bell jar is connected to a vacuum pump. Now we have to press the switch and we will be able to hear the bell. Now we have to start the vacuum pump. i.e, evacuate the bell jar. When the air in the jar is pumped out gradually, the sound becomes fainter, although the same current is passing through the bell. After some time when a bit amount of air is left inside the bell jar, we will hear a very feeble sound. When the air is removed completely, we won't hear a bit sound. Now, when we fill the jar again with air, we will hear a bit sound which raises as the air is filled in the jar.
Thus, from this experiment we understand that sound needs a medium to travel.
