To classify an enzyme according to the type of reaction catalysed, it is occasionally necessary to choose between alternative ways of regarding a given reaction. The IUB initiated standards of enzyme nomenclature which recommended that the enzyme name indicates both the substrate acted upon and the type of reaction catalysed. Some examples are Oxidoreductases, lyases, ligases, hydrolases are a common type.
