Question

Classify animal tissues based on their functions

Open in App
Solution

The animal body is made up of different types of tissues, each carrying out its specific functions.

Classification

Based on their functions of the tissues, animal tissues are classified into four groups :

(a) Epithelial tissue

  1. Epithelium grows upon other tissues and is composed of one or more layers of cells covering the external and internal surfaces of various body organs.
  2. It serves the function of protection, secretion, and absorption.

(b) Connective tissue

  1. The connective tissue is a widely distributed and most abundant type of animal tissue.
  2. It consists of cells that are embedded in a matrix.
  3. It helps to connect, bind and support different structures of the animal body.

(c) Muscular tissue

  1. The muscular tissues consist of elongated fiber-like, cells that are responsible for the movement in our body. These tissues are also known as muscle fibres.
  2. Muscle fibers are the structural and functional units of the muscle.
  3. The sarcolemma is the plasma membrane of the muscle fiber.
  4. Muscles contain special proteins called contractile proteins, which contract and relax to cause movement.

(d) Nervous tissue

  1. All cells possess the ability to respond to stimuli or changes in the external environment.
  2. The cells of the nervous tissue are highly specialized so that they can transmit the stimulus very rapidly from one place to another within the body.
  3. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves are all composed of the nervous tissue.
  4. Neurons are the structural and functional units of nervous tissue.
