Question

Classify the following as being either a p-type or an n-type semiconductor:

B doped with Si

Open in App
Solution

p-type semiconductor:

  • A p-type semiconductor is known as an intrinsic semiconductor which is formed due to the dopping of III group elements i.e. Boron, Aluminium, and Thallium.
  • p-type semiconductors are also defined as the positive type semiconductors having a deficiency of 1 electron.

n-type semiconductor:

  • An n-type semiconductor is an intrinsic semiconductor that is formed due to dopping of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Arsenic, Antimony, and Bismuth.
  • An n-type semiconductor is also defined as a negative type semi-conductor having an excess of 1 electron.

B doped with Si:

  • B is a III group element and Si is an IV group element.
  • When a III group element is doped with an IV group element, it generally creates an extra electron and forms the n-type semiconductor.

Hene, when B doped with Si , it creates an n-type semiconductor.
