Endocytosis :
- It is a process whereby the cells absorb materials such as proteins from outside by engulfing them.
- Most of the substances are large polar molecules that cannot pass through the plasma membrane so this process helps the cell to absorb useful substances.
Types of endocytosis :
Endocytosis is further classified into three types based on the nature of absorption of materials:
- Phagocytosis is the ingestion of solid particles by the cell.
- Pinocytosis is the ingestion of liquid matter by the cell.
- Receptor-mediated endocytosis is the process in which the substance gets attached to the membrane receptors and causes changes inside it. In this process, specific molecules are ingested into the cell. The specificity is based on the receptor-ligand interaction. Receptors on the plasma membrane of the target tissue will specifically bind to ligand present on the outer side of the cell.
