Leaf:

  1. The thin flattened structure containing the green pigment called chlorophyll which develops from the node of the stem is called the leaf.
  2. Leaf of the plant performs photosynthesis due to the presence of chlorophyll pigment, which can trap the solar energy.

Leaf margin:

  1. The area extending across the edge of the leaf lamina is called the leaf margin.
  2. There are four types of leaves based on the nature of leaf margin, which are complete, serrated, wavy and spinose.
  3. Complete margin is found in the leaves where the edge is smooth without any incisions.
    • Examples: banyan, mango, beech, etc.
  4. Serrated margin is found in the leaves in which the edge contains notches forming structures like the teeth.
    • Examples: rose, china rose, sweet chestnut, etc.
  5. Wavy margin is found in the leaves where the edges are undulated but not divided,
    • Examples: Polyalthia, ashoka, etc.
  6. Spinose margin is found in the leaves where spines develop from the edges.
    • Examples: prickly poppy.
