Solution

Definition of solution:

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution has a solvent and a solute as its components.

Based on the amount of solute in the given amount of solvent, solutions are classified into the three types namely:

  1. Unsaturated solutions: A solution in which the solute is in a lesser amount in comparison with the solvent is called an unsaturated solution.
Example: A solution of sugar in water in which more sugar can be dissolved at a given temperature is an unsaturated solution.
  2. Saturated solutions: A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved in a definite amount of solvent at a given temperature is called a saturated solution.
Example: Seawater is already saturated with salt.
  3. Supersaturated solutions: A solution that has more solute at a given temperature than that of the saturated solution is called a supersaturated solution.
Example: Carbonated water contains more carbon dioxide dissolved in water.
