Solution

Part 1: Alkanes

  1. Alkanes are hydrocarbons that possess the general formula CnH2n+2.
  2. In the given list, For n=2, hydrocarbon is C2H2×2+2 ,that is, C2H6.
  3. For n=1, hydrocarbon is C1H1×2+2 ,that is, CH4.
  4. Therefore, these two hydrocarbons are alkanes.

Part 2: Alkenes

  1. Alkenes possess the general formula CnH2n.
  2. So, in the given list C2H4 is an alkene.

Part 3: Alkynes

  1. Alkynes possess the general formula CnH2n-2.
  2. For n=2, alkyne is C2H2n-2 , that is, C2H2
  3. For n=3, alkyne is C3H2×3-2 , that is, C3H4.

Therefore, in the given list: Alkane is: C2H6 and CH4, Alkene is : C2H4 and Alkyne is: C2H2 and C3H4.
