blood

Solution

Mixture: When two or more substances are mixed in any proportion.

  • The components of a mixture can be separated by physical methods of separation.
  • Example: A mixture of Sand and Iron (Fe) can be separated by the use of a magnet.

Homogeneous mixture: A mixture that exhibits uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a homogeneous mixture.Example: Sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, Sugar (C12H22O11) solution etc.

Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture that does not exhibit uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a heterogeneous mixture. Example: Muddy water, Sand and Iron (Fe) nails combined together.

Blood is a heterogeneous mixture. This is because:

  • Blood consists of various types of cells, proteins along with plasma most of which is water i.e.; there is no uniformity in the composition of blood throughout.
  • There is a clear boundary of separation of the cells which separates them from the plasma of blood.
  • The blood cells (white blood cells, red blood cells, etc.) can be separated using the physical method of separation called centrifugation.
