sand-sugar

Open in App
Solution

Mixture: When two or more substances (elements or compounds or an element and compound) are mixed in any proportion.

Homogeneous mixture: A mixture that exhibits uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a homogeneous mixture.Example: Sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, Sugar (C12H22O11) solution etc.

Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture that does not exhibit uniformity in its composition and properties throughout its mass is known as a heterogeneous mixture. Example: Muddy water, Sand and Iron (Fe) nails combined together.

Sand-Sugar (C12H22O11) mixture can be classified as a heterogeneous mixture.

  • There is no uniformity in the composition as the particles of sand and sugar are not uniformly distributed throughout the mass of the mixture.
  • At certain places, sand will be more than sugar and at other places, sugar might be more than sand.
  • Also, there is a clear boundary of separation between the particles of sand and sugar.
