Classify the following as pure substances or mixtures. In the case of pure substances, classify whether they are elements or compounds but in the case of a mixture, identify whether they are homogeneous or heterogeneous.
air, milk, graphite, tap water, distilled water, brass, oxygen, steel, iron, diamond, sodium chloride, iodised table salt, silver.
Pure substance-
It can be further divided in two parts:
Element - The substance which is made of same kind of substance.
example- gold
Compound- When atoms of two or elements combine chemically in a fixed proportion.
example- hydrogen and oxygen is combined to form water in a fixed proportion.
Pure substance-
Element | Compound |
graphite | sodium chloride |
distilled water | |
oxygen | |
diamond | |
silver | |
iron |
Mixture-
Types of mixture:
Homogeneous MIxture- It is one in which there is perfect mixing of the components of the mixture.
Example- Salt solution
Heterogeneous Mixture- A mixture that consists of the physically distinct part each with different properties.
Example- a mixture of sand and water.
Homogeneous Mixture | Heterogeneous Mixture |
air | brass |
milk | iodised table salt |
tap water | steel |
