Classify the following into elements and compounds. Ammonia, sugar, nitrogen, mercury, sodium chloride, water, copper sulphate, sodium, carbon.
Elements are pure substances which are composed of only one type of atom.
Compound are substances which are formed by two or more different types of elements that are united chemically in fixed proportions.
Ammonia is composed of nitrogen and hydrogen.
Sugar is composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.
Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen.
Sodium chloride is composeed of sodium and chlorine.
Copper sulphate is composed of copper, sulphur and oxygen. Therefore, these are compounds. On the otherhand sodium, nitrogen, mercury, and carbon are made up of only one kind of atom. So these are elements.
