Forests are divided into three types :

1. Reserved Forests: Over 50% of the forests in India are declared as reserved forests. They are reserved for specific resource value such as timber, wood, grazing etc. They are not used for cultivation. The states of Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, West Bengal and Maharashtra have a huge percentage of forests classified to be as reserved forests.

2. Protected Forests: Around one-third of the forests in India are known as protected forests. They are protected by law. In these forests felling of trees is permitted after a certain period and are subjected to rejuvenation. Most of the forests in Punjab, Haryana, Orissa, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh etc.are classified as protected forests.

3. Unclassed Forests: All the forests and wastelands other than the reserved and protected forests are known as the unclassed forests. Most of the forests found in Gujarat and north-eastern states are unclassed forests.

4. Permanent Forests: The reserved and protected forests are together called permanent forests. Madhya Pradesh has 75% of its forests classified as permanent forests.
