Open in App
Solution

Fossil fuels:

A hydrocarbon-containing material is generated underground from the residues of deceased plants and animals.

Features of fossil fuels:

  1. Fossil fuels are generally composed of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H).
  2. During combustion, carbon and hydrogen combine with atmospheric oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2).
  3. When combustion remains incomplete, a part of the carbon does not oxidize completely, leading to carbon monoxide production.

Combustion of fossil fuels in insufficient air produces carbon monoxide instead of carbon dioxide.
