Open in App
Solution

  1. Definition of non-metals: The elements which form negative ions by gaining or accepting electrons are called non-metals.
  2. Non-metals are called electronegative elements because they tend to gain electrons and form an anion(-ve ion). They have an affinity towards electrons.
  3. The negatively charged electron converts it into an electronegative element.
  4. For example, Chlorine(Cl) has 7 electrons in its outer shell, and thus it can gain 1 electron to be stable. For this, this is an electronegative non-metal.
