Question

Comment on the change in pH values of the following solutions during electrolysis.
a) Aqueous solution of AgNO3
b) Aqueous saturated solution of KCl.
C) Aqueous solution of CuCl2

Solution

(a) Aqueous solution of AgNO3
Ag++eAgH2OH++OH4OHO2+2H2O+4e
H+ ions remains in solution. Hence, the value of pH decreases.

(b) Aqueous saturated solution of KCl
H2OH++OH2H++2eH22ClCl2+2e
OH ions remain in solution and hence, the pH increases.

(c) Cu2++2eCu2ClCl2+2e
Both H+ ions and OH ions remain in solution and hence, there is no change in pH.
