Comment on the following statements.
(i) Atomic size of halogens is the smallest in their period.

Halogens

  1. Halogens are the elements of group 17.
  2. They are non-metals and have high electronegative values.
  3. Example- Fluorine(F), Chlorine(Cl), Bromine(Br).

Part 2: Reason for small size:-

  1. We know that atomic radius decreases across the period from left to right.
  2. Due to the increase in the effective nuclear charge, the electrons are attracted strongly by the nucleus.

Therefore, the Atomic size of halogens is the smallest in their period due to an increase in effective nuclear charge.
