In charge of maintaining law and order in the country, the Indian Police Service is characterised by a system of ranks, each possessing their own set of duties and responsibilities. At the very top of this structure at the district level is the Superintendent of Police who plays a supervisory role, managing and guiding the work of ranks lower than himself or herself within the said jurisdiction. Each Superintendent of Police has a certain number of police stations under his or her control. The head of a police station is the Station House Officer or SHO. The Station House Officer typically holds the rank of Inspector or Sub-Inspector. He or she also has a number of Constables under him to manage the day-to-day activities of the police station.
