Question

Commercial 3 importance of a polyembryony

Open in App
Solution

Dear student.

In some fruits such as orange and mango, the nucellar cells that surround the embryo start dividing and protrude into the embryo sac. These develop into embryos; thus resulting in the presence of more than one embryo inside each ovule. This condition is known as polyembryony.

Importance:
1. Disease free plants are obtained through the process of polyembryony.
2. Hybrid plants with high productivity and yield can be obtained by means of Polyembryony.
3. Seeds with better adaptability to survival under varied conditions can be obtained by means of polyembryony.

Regards.
