Question

Compare an electron and a proton in repsect of mass and charge.

Open in App
Solution

Protons and neutrons have the same mass, which is about 2000 times larger than the mass of an electron. Protons and electrons have an electrical charge. The magnitude of this electrical charge is the same for both, but protons are positive and electrons are negative. Neutrons have no electrical charge; they are neutral. An electron has a mass of zero (0) while a proton has a mass of 1 (a.m.u.)
An electron has a negative charge (-1) while a proton has a positive charge (+1)
The mass of an electron is so negligible that it is considered to have a mass of zero. The mass of an electron is about 1/1840 that of a proton.
Mass of electron - 9.11 ×1028 g
Mass of proton - 1.67 ×1024 g
