Question

Compare and contrast the metallic character and hardness of sodium and iron. Justify.

Open in App
Solution

1.Metallic character: It is the tendency to lose electrons by an atom which gives it the metallic nature and basic nature due to the presence of electro positivity character.

2.Sodium(Na) belongs to IA group and has 1 valence electron, it can lose that electron readily and show high metallic nature due to low Ionisation energy.

3.Iron(Fe) belongs to VIIIB group and has 8 valence electrons, the tendency to loose electrons is not easy in transition metals compared to alkali metals due to small size and effective nuclear charge.

4.Sodium is more metallic than Iron where as the strength of Sodium is less than that of Iron due to weak metallic bond in Sodium, they are soft such that they can be cut with knife.
