Solution:
Lord Wellesley & Dalhousie played prominent roles in the expansion of British rule in India.
Lord Wellesley’s Policy::Lord Wellesley introduced the Subsidiary Alliance to impose British rule in princely states indirectly. The Company’s army will be provided to states if maintenance or provinces with equivalent money were given to the British. Ex: Nizam. There will be one British representative in the state and restrictions were imposed. Wellesley attacked the states that refused to accept the treaty like Mysore.
Lord Dalhousie’’s Policy::•Lord Dalhousie adopted the Policy of Annexation for the occupation of Indian princely states directly. The states were annexed by war(Punjab) or in case of the King’s death without an heir (Satara). The annexation was done on the pretext of mismanagement (Awadh) or debt collection. The states with namesake rulers were also annexed. Ex: Tanjore & Karnataka.
