Question

Compare orogenic and epeirogenic movements.

Open in App
Solution

Instructions
  • Explain orogenic movement.
  • Explain epeirogenic movement.
Solution
The orogenic movement is also called the mountain-building movement. Here, the deformation of the Earth's crust has occurred to form mountains. These are horizontal movements on the earth's crust. It happens due to tectonic activities in the earth's interior.

Epeirogenic movements occur when the force acts towards the centre of the earth, then there will be subduction in the crust and thereby the formation of the seabed. Similarly, when the force acts away from the centre of the earth, then the crust uplifts leading to the formation of the continent. And that’s why they are usually called continental building movements.
