The colonial period in India started in the mid 18th century. India was colonized by Britain. In contrast, the colonial period in Vietnam started in the mid 19th century when it was colonized by the French. Both the British and French exploited their respective colonies. They suppressed industrialization in their colonies and were primarily interested in extracting the resources of their colonies for the benefit of the mother country.
In India, the movement for independence was largely non-violent under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. In contrast, the independence movement of Vietnam was highly violent under the leadership of the Communist Party under Ho Chi Minh.
