Question

Compare the imbibing capacities of pea and wheat seeds.

Open in App
Solution

The pea plant is a legume. The pea seeds are mostly composed of protein. The imbibing capacity of the protein is very high. Thus, there will be more imbibition of water by the pea seeds. The process of germination occurs in less time. The wheat seeds are cereals and are a rich source of carbohydrate and starch. The imbibing capacity of the carbohydrates is very low. Thus, the seeds of wheat will show less imbibition of water. This will delay the process of germination in less water.
