Human Development Index for the year 2004 between India and Nepal is based on the following criteria.:

a. Life expectancy- For India was 63.7 and For Nepal was 62

b. Literacy rate for India was 61.3% and for Nepal was 50%

c. Decent Standard of living based on per capita income.- 3139 (in US dollars), whereas for Nepal it was 1490 (in US dollars)HDI rank of India was 126 and for Nepal was 138.

d. This certainly revealed that Nepal lagged behind in terms of Human development.
e. Its per capita income is less than half of India's.
f. But in terms of life expectancy, literacy rate there is not much of a difference.
