Solution

Property

Metals

Non-metals
Nature of oxides
  • Generally, they form basic oxides, and if soluble in water, form an alkaline solution.
  • Examples
  • 2Ca(s)calcium+O2(g)oxygengas2CaO(s)calciumOxide
  • 2CaO(s)calciumoxide+2H2O(l)water2Ca(OH)2(aq)calciumhydroxide.
  • Exception: Cr2O3 is an acidic oxide. ZnO, PbO and Al2O3 are amphoteric oxides.
  • Generally, they form acidic oxides or neutral. When combined with water, they form acids.
  • For example they form acidic or neutral. When combined with water, they form acids.
  • Examples
  • CO2(g)carbondioxide+H2O(l)waterH2CO3(aq)carbonicacid
  • N2O5(g)dinitrogenpentoxide+H2O(l)water2HNO3(gnitricacid).
  • CO2 and N2O are neutral oxides. whereas N2O4,SO2 etc are acidic in nature.
