Question

Compare the properties of germanium with the properties of eka-silicon predicted by Mendeleev

Open in App
Solution

  1. Mendeleev was predicting the properties of three elements – gallium, scandium, and germanium – that had not then been discovered.
  2. Mendeleev named elements as EKA- Boron EKA- Aluminium and EKA Silicon which were later replaced as Scandium, Gallium, and germanium respectively
  3. Mendeleev named one such element gap Eka silicon. Based on its periodic table position, he predicted its mass, density, melting point, and color.
  4. A new element named Germanium was discovered in Germany fifteen years after this prediction. Its properties were identical to those of Eka silicon.
