Question

Compare the properties such as electronic configuration, nature of oxides of metals and non-metals.

Open in App
Solution

(1) Electronic Configuration

  • Metals generally contain 1,2, or 3 electrons in the outer shell which ionize by losing electrons.
  • Non-metals contain 4 to 7 electrons in their outer shell and ionize by giving electrons.

(2) Nature of oxides

  • Oxides of metals are basic in nature except Al2O3and ZnO that shows amphoteric nature.

Na2O(s)+H2O(l)2NaOH(aq)

  • Oxides of non-metals are acidic except NO,CO,H2Oetc. from neutral oxides.

SO3(s)+H2O(l)H2SO4(aq)
