Question

Compared to O2, the diffusion rate of CO2 through the diffusion membrane per unit difference in partial pressure is much higher. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Factors affecting diffusion of gases

The diffusion of gases depends on the following:

● Solubility of the gas

● Thickness of the membrane

● Partial pressure difference across the diffusion barrier etc.

Higher diffusion rate of CO2

The solubility of CO2 in the blood is 2025 times higher than that of O2. Therefore, the diffusion rate of CO2 per unit difference in partial pressure through the diffusion membrane is considerably higher than that of O2.
