Compared to the 1970s, there has hardly been any change in the distribution of workforce across various industries. Comment.
It is not true that there has hardly been any change in the distribution of workforce across various industries since the 1970s. Distribution of workforce in the industrial sector shows a substantial shift from agricultural work to non-agricultural work. In 1972-73, about 74% or workforce was engaged in primary sector but this proportion has declined to 53% in 2009-10. The shares of secondary and service sectors have increased from 11 to 21% and 15 to 25%, respectively.
The distribution of workforce in different status indicates that over the last four decades (1972-2010), people have moved from self-employment and regular salaried employment to casual wage work which is not a healthy trend as this makes labour more vulnerable to exploitation. Yet self-employment continues to be the major employment provider.
