Question

Complete and balance the equation

CO+H2

Open in App
Solution

When carbon monoxide reacts with hydrogen it gives methyl alcohol 0r methanol.

  • The complete reaction is :

H2(g)+CO(g)CH3OH(l)

  • The Chemical equation is not balanced. the number of atoms of carbon and oxygen is equal on both sides, but not hydrogen
  • So let's balance the number of atoms on both sides equally. as the number of hydrogen on the product side is 4 and on the reactant side is 2, so make it equal by making 4 atoms on the reactant side also.

2H2(g)Hydrogen+CO(g)CarbonmonoxideCH3OH(l)Methanol

Now, the chemical equation is balanced.
