Question

Complete and balance the equation

Na+2H2O

Open in App
Solution

Reaction between Sodium and water:

  • When Sodium reacted with water it produces sodium hydroxide and hydrogen with a large amount of heat.
  • Since heat evolved in this reaction. So, this is an example of an Exothermic reaction.
  • The chemical reaction can be written as:

Na(s)Sodium+H2O(l)WaterNaOH(l)Sodiumhydroxide+H2(g)Hydrogen+Heat

Balancing of the chemical equation.

  • The number of atoms of Sodium and Oxygen is equal on both sides. But Hydrogen atoms are not the same.
AtomReactantProduct
Sodium (Na)11
Oxygen (O)11
Hydrogen (H)23
  • Balance the equation by multiplying water and Sodium by 2 on the reactant side and Sodium hydroxide by 2 on the product side.
AtomReactantProduct
Sodium (Na)22
Oxygen (O)22
Hydrogen (H)44

2Na(s)Sodium+2H2O(l)Water2NaOH(l)Sodiumhydroxide+H2(g)Hydrogen+Heat
