Solution

Reaction of magnesium with hydrochloric acid:

  • When magnesium(Mg) reacts with hydrochloric acid(HCl), it forms magnesium chloride(MgCl2) and there is the evolution of hydrogen gas(H2).
  • Mg(s)magnesium+2HCl(aq)hydrochloricacidMgCl2(aq)magnesiumchloride+H2(g)hydrogengas
  • It is a displacement reaction i.e higher reactive element (Mg) displaces a less reactive element(H) from its compound(HCl).
