Question

Complete the following table relating to the atomic structure of the element:

ElementAtomic No.Mass No.No. of protonsNo. of neutronsNo. of electrons
Aluminium 27 13

Solution

  • Atomic number(Z)- The total number of protons in the nucleus of an atom gives us the atomic number of that atom.
  • Mass number(A)- The number of protons and neutrons combine to give us the mass number of an atom.
  • Any neutral atom has the same number of electrons as the number of protons.
  • For a neutral atom Z=atomic number=number of protons=number of electrons.
  • Here, No. of electrons is 13, so atomic number=number of protons=13
  • Number of neutrons=A-Z=27-13=14
  • Hence, the completed table will be-
ElementAtomic No.Mass No.No. of protonsNo. of neutronsNo. of electrons
Aluminium 1327 13 1413
