Metals in the presence of heat react with oxygen to form their respective oxides. Oxygen is electronegative in nature and therefore readily accepts electrons. Zinc being a metal is electropositive and easily donates electrons to attain stability. Zinc has 2 valence electrons which is given to oxygen (it has 6 electrons in its valence shell and needs 2 electrons to attain stability) and therefore a bond is formed. So the complete equation is- Zn+O2Δ2 ZnO
