The maximum current that can flows through a fuse wire without melting it is called its rating.
We know that heat produced is proportional to the resistance, which is given by :

This heat is measured per unit length, so the length is immaterial. But the cross-sectional area matters. More the area, less the resistance and less the heat.
Therefore, higher the current rating, thicker is the fuse wire.
