Solution

Elements character in the modern Periodic table:

  1. Atomic radius decreases along the period of the periodic table due to an increase in effective nuclear charge and increases down the group due to an increase in the number of shells down the group.
  2. The ionization energy increases as the effective nuclear charge increases along the period and decreases as the number of shells along with the group increases
  3. Electron affinity decreases from top to bottom of the group and increases in moving from left to right along a period because on going down a group the size of atom increases and therefore, decreases in the effective nuclear attraction for the electron
  4. Electronegativity increases because effective nuclear charge increases along the period and decreases due to an increase in the number of shells down the group.
  5. Elements with electron-donating tendencies exhibit metallic properties. The greatest metallic character is shown at the bottom of the group as down the group metallic character increases as the atomic size increases and metallic character decreases along the period due to nuclear charge increases and decrease in the atomic size.
  6. Elements with a tendency to accept electrons exhibit non-metallic properties. Non-metallic character increases across a period due to an nuclear charge increases and decrease in the atomic size and decreases down the group due to increases in size of atom.
