Question

Components of a binary mixture of two liquids A and B were being separatedby distillation. After some time separation of components stopped andcomposition of vapour phase became same as that of liquid phase. Both thecomponents started coming in the distillate. Explain why this happened.

Solution

This happened so because the mixture of two liquids A and B are azeotropic mixture.
Azeotropes are mixtures whose components cannot be separated by distillation and boils at constant temperature because these mixtures are non ideal solutions which shows deviation from Raoult's law.
For one of the intermediate composition, if the total vapour pressure of such solution is highest and boiling point is lowest, it is said to be minium boiling azeotropes. These show positive deviation from Raoult's law. Or else, if the total vapour pressure is least and boiling point is highest, it is said to be maximum boiling azeotropes. These show negative deviation from Raoult's law.
