Question

Concentrated nitric acid oxidizes phosphorus to phosphoric acid according to the following equation:

P+5HNO3conc.H3PO4+H2O+5NO2

If 9.3g of phosphorus was used in the reaction, calculate:

(b) The mass of phosphoric acid formed? H=1,N=14,P=31,O=16

Solution

Step 1: Given information

  • Phosphorus P undergoes a chemical reaction with concentrated nitric acid HNO3 and results in the formation of phosphoric acid H3PO4, water H2O and nitrogen dioxide NO2.
  • The given reaction is as follows:

P+5HNO3conc.H3PO4+H2O+5NO2

  • The given mass of PhosphorusP=9.3g.
  • The atomic mass of HydrogenH=1g.
  • The atomic mass of PhosphorusP=31g.
  • The atomic mass of NitrogenN=14g.
  • The atomic mass of OxygenO=16g.

Step 2: Calculation of gram molecular mass of Phosphoric acid.

  • The gram molecular mass of phosphoric acid is calculated as follows:

GrammolecularmassofH3PO4=1g×3+31g+16g×4=98g

Step 3: Calculation of mass of Phosphoric acid produced

Atomic weight of PhosphorusP=31g.

  • Since, 31g of phosphorous produces 98g of phosphoric acid.
  • Thus, 9.3g of phosphorous will produce 9831×9.3=29.4g of phosphoric acid.

Therefore, 29.4g of phosphoric acid is formed from 9.3g of phosphorus.
