For the two lenses seperated by a distance d, we have
1feq=1f1+1f2df1f2...(1)
Given,
f1=f2=f(say)

Substituting the values in (1), we get

1feq=1f+1fdf×f

feq=f22fd

This is a quadratic equation of f.

Condition 1:

When , d<f

So, we can conclude that , feq<f and positive

So, the system will behave as a convex lens but of focal length <f.

Condition 2:

When , d=2f

feq will be infinite, the system will behave as a plane glass plate of infinite focal length.

Condition 3:

When , d>2f

feq will be negative. the system will behave as a concave lens.
