Consider the diode circuit shown in the figure below:



The cut in voltage of diode D is equal to Von=0.7 V. If the input to the circuit Vin(t)=3sin (2πt)V, then the average value of the output voltage Vout(t) will be equal to _____ V.

The output waveform for the above circuit can be drawn as


where θ=sin1(1.73)=0.60 rad

To find the average value of the output we have to find the area A1 and A2 for the above figure

Area A1=πθ1θ1(3 sin θ0.7)dθ=2π/2θ1(3 sin θ0.7)dθ

=2[3 cos θ0.7 θ]1.570.60=2[1.099+3×0.824+0.42]=3.586 V
Now, area A2 can be calculated as
A2=1[2π(πθ1θ1)]
=1(π+2θ1)
now θ1=4.34 V
Average =3.586+4.342π=1.26 V
