Question

Consider the following carbonyl complex compounds.

(i) Mo(CO)x (ii) Hy[Cr(CO)5] (iii) Ru3(CO)z

Then calculate value of |z+yx|.

Open in App
Solution

The carbonyls in general obey the effective atomic number rule and their effective atomic number = atomic number of next noble gas

(i) Mo(CO)x EAN of Molybdenum is '54'

42+2x=54

x=6

(ii) Hy[Cr(CO)5] EAN of Chromium is '36'

24+(2×5)+y=36

y=2

(iii) Ru3(CO)z EAN of each Ruthenium is '54'

44+2 (from other Ru-atoms)+2z1=54

z1=4

z=3z1=12

Then z+yx=12+26=8
